Access to insulin is a public health issue that affects both patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and those with type 1 diabetes mellitus. This medication is essential for preventing complications and improving the quality of life of those who need it. However, evidence shows access issues with insulin in multiple parts of the world, including Peru.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The primary objective of this project is to improve access to insulin in Peru. The specific objectives are: 1) to raise awareness of the need to optimize diabetes care and access to insulin in the national health system, 2) to share the results of previous ACCISS studies in Peru and worldwide with decision-makers, 3) to develop an insulin procurement and distribution plan to improve insulin availability and affordability in the public sector, 4) to create a tool to monitor insulin prices and availability across different regions of the country, 5) to develop a manual for insulin use and promote its application by healthcare staff, and 6) to ensure that civil society is better informed about access to treatment and care for people with type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
To achieve the proposed objectives, various actions will be taken: I) Engagement of key stakeholders (organizations related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, decision-makers, physicians), II) Active participation in developing an insulin use manual, training healthcare staff, and implementing the manual in care centers, III) Estimation of diabetes management costs, IV) Creation of documents to support the national insurance system and improve insulin procurement and distribution. Finally, a tool will be created to monitor insulin prices and availability.<\/p>\n
