Supporting Indigenous Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Peru

Fotografía: OEPIAP
In Peru, very little is known about indigenous women in higher education. On the other hand, in recent years, although there is debate about the low presence of women in STEM careers, these debates do not include or problematize the situation of indigenous women. The analyzes on this topic do not contemplate the specific barriers that indigenous women face in training in these disciplines. In this context, debating the situation of Amazonian indigenous women in STEM careers, in a country like Peru, which enjoys great cultural and linguistic diversity, is essential as there is little information in this regard.
Aim:
Understand professional training in STEM careers, from the point of view of indigenous university women who have accessed through affirmative action mechanisms and the Beca 18 CNA to two universities in the Peruvian Amazon.
Study design:
Ethnographic research based on indigenous experience and reflexivity, as well as that of university authorities and public officials.
Result:
With this work we hope to place in the debate the situation of higher education of Amazonian indigenous women, so that they are considered in public policies in this regard.
