Pilot study of the DIALOG+ intervention: Assessing the feasibility of implementing a therapeutic intervention for patients with mental health problems in Peru

DIALOG+ is a simple user-centered intervention aimed at assessing the satisfaction with their life and the treatment they are receiving, address concerns they may have and facilitate the communication with their health provider in the context of mental health care. The intervention seeks to ensure the communication between user and health provider centers around the user and to promote a positive change in an effective manner using an approach based on problem-solving. The intervention is supported by the use of an app for tablets, which lists all the steps to be followed in each session with the user.

Each session begins with the user assessing their satisfaction with 8 domains of their life. These scores are registered and can be reviewed and compared with previous scores. With the help of the health provider, each user selects some domains to be discussed in further detail and agree on feasible actions to improve the situation of each domain. Then, after agreeing the actions to take, these are registered in the app and will be displayed at the beginning of the next session for follow-up.

The pilot study was conducted in five community mental health centers with 12 health providers and 40 users included.

Aim:

To assess the implementation of DIALOG+ to support the community mental health care and identify improvements in the quality of life of the patients within 6 months of receiving the intervention.

Study design:

Pilot study with pre- and post-intervention measures.

Result:

The pilot had to be suspended due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the community mental health centers and their work.
