Chronic kidney disease of unknown cause (CKDu) in disadvantaged communities in low- and middle-income countries

There is an epidemic of primarily tubular-interstitial chronic kidney disease (CKD) clustering in agricultural communities in low-and-middle income countries. Because it is currently unclear whether the etiology is single or multifactorial; this pathology has been classified as CKD of unknown cause (CKDu). Due to the large number of premature deaths attributable to CKDu, it is necessary to know, understand and determine its existence in our country.
Aim:
To determine the distribution of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and to estimate the prevalence of low GFR (<60 ml / min / 1.7 m2) in a random sample of participants in the Tumbes region.
Study design:
This study will have two stages: 1) a cross-sectional study to determine the GFR using different methods (serum creatinine calculated with the formula CKD-EPI and cystatin C; and 2) validation of the iohexol test for estimation of GFR.
